I have had occassion recently to witness and offer advice to an operations group putting kanban into practice. I am excited to see this development. Some operations groups I have seen recently could use the visibility that a Kanban can bring, much as I have seen that visibility brought into software development.
Operations like DBA activities, and server activites are shorter in duration than a typical software project. I believe those activities can be classified as we would a story or even an MMF for larger work. Another complex aspect of operations involves always implementing on live mission critical systems. Mistakes can cost real money if this is a database on a production line, and those workers let you know immediately if that happens.
As with many departments I also believe that the evil of multitasking has deep roots here. Most folks are juggling a lot of different "MMF"'s and cycle time is long. Getting a limit on WIP for an operations team may take longer than with a software development team.
But getting a limit is doable. Remember to give a team as much as it can take. Just seeing the amount of work that has to be done on the kanban board can help a team. That transparency alerts management to what the team is working on. It also brings up necessary conversations that allow the team to begin to make their process flow. I will try to post more on how an operations team can implement WIP. But I do not believe operations is as different from software development as I initially thought. In the meantime I would appreciate any comments on how others might have done this.
