From a not to distant conversation on the kanbandev list, David Anderson postulated that Kanban works well in these situations:
- Team is very experimental and innovative on process - even if they are an XP/Scrum team. Observe the Portland School Kanban / Naked Planning adoption with XP teams in Oregon.
- The team is fearful and resistant to job description changes and role and responsibility changes
- The organization is conservative and still using a waterfall approach - no Agile practice adoption
- The work is not naturally project-centric
- Time-boxed iterations are a poor and unnatural fit for the domain/context
Examing this against my experience, the teams I have worked with fall into areas 4 and 5. The operations team has work that is not naturally a project. My first team found that using iterations for our sustaining engineering was not a good fit. Kanban to the rescue!
But where do teams like Clinton Keiths fall in? I might add another option here. In Clinton's case he is an agile trainer bringing lean into game development companies. In other words, the company is looking for an edge, not the team. So I would add another option to this:
6. The organization is looking for a competitive edge, and believes lean processes in IT provide that over other agile processes.
